//profile: who you get...
Steve Hearsum is a consultant, supervisor, coach, speaker and author working at the intersection of leadership, organisational change, systems thinking and change practice. His public positioning is deliberately provocative: “the right kind of fly in your ointment.” In practice, that means he helps leaders, consultants, coaches and organisations face the conversations they are avoiding, especially when they reach for certainty, models or quick fixes.
He is the author of No Silver Bullet: Bursting the bubble of the organisational quick fix (2024), and much of his work challenges the fantasy that complex organisational problems can be solved by a single model, methodology, expert or leadership intervention. His recurring argument is that leaders and practitioners often collude in buying and selling certainty in the form of silver bullet, ‘quick fix’ solutions because uncertainty, shame, anxiety and not-knowing are hard to bear.
Steve’s work focuses less on providing answers and more on improving practice. He helps people examine how they lead, consult, coach, intervene, speak, avoid, collude and show up in the messy reality of organisational life. To way he does this shows up in his language, returning frequently to key themes such as “scaffolding conversations,” “useful discomfort,” “asking better questions,” “psychological containment,” “reflexivity,” and learning to “dance differently” when the context changes.
His style is sharp, compassionate, candid and intellectually restless. He uses humour, provocation and plain-speaking to make difficult material discussable, but the underlying tone is serious, humane and practical.
Positioning
Steve is best understood as a practitioner who helps organisations and the people advising them to become more honest with themselves and others, reflexive and capable in complexity. He is especially valuable for senior leaders, OD practitioners, coaches, consultants and change professionals who are tired of performative ‘transformation’ work and want to develop the courage, skill and containment needed for more truthful organisational conversations.
He is not positioning himself as a guru; in fact, he is openly suspicious of gurus, thought leadership, leadership models and consulting rituals that sell confidence while avoiding complexity.
Core themes he explores
// The illusion of control in organisations
// The search for certainty and simple answers
// The collusion between buyers and sellers of quick fixes
// Leadership as practice, not abstract virtue
// Change as lived human experience, not a deliverable
// Anxiety, shame, fragility and not-knowing in organisational life
// Useful discomfort as a route to learning
// Reflexivity over reflection alone
// Better questions, stronger conversations and accountability
// Challenging the guru, model and thought-leadership economy
Voice and presence
Steve’s voice is provocative, wry, self-aware and anti-grandiose. He is comfortable asking the awkward questions in the room, but not for theatre alone. Provocation must serve a purpose: to reveal the ‘system’ to itself, interrupt collusion, and help people think and act more wisely.
